Is Your Child Vitamin D Deficient?

New studies are proving that vitamin D is an important nutrient that can help prevent many diseases such as cancer, depression, diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, chronic fatigue, autoimmune diseases and cardiovascular disease.

There are a few different ways to get vitamin D. Vitamin D may come from foods or vitamin supplements; vitamin D can also be made by the skin when it is exposed to ultraviolet rays (UV light).

Vitamin D deficiency is often missed because there are no real symptoms associated with it. Rickets and osteomalacia (softening of the bones) are the most common signs of vitamin D deficiency but there is no way for parents to tell if their child is suffering from these illnesses. The only way to prove that your child is vitamin D deficient is by completing a blood test which screens for a particular form of vitamin D, called 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D).

Think that name sounds complicated? Unfortunately, many doctors do too. In fact, doctors often order the wrong blood test when assessing vitamin D levels. Be sure to ask for 25(OH) D blood test not 1, 25-dihydroxy-vitamin D (aka calcitriol). With such complicated names, it is no wonder that such mistakes are made!

Vitamin D deficiency exists when 25(OH) D levels fall below 25 ng/mL. Levels may vary depending on time of year, direct sunlight exposure, skin color and vitamin D consumption. Levels should be between 50 - 80 ng/mL year-round for both children and adults.

As a doctor, I am finding more and more children with low levels of vitamin D, mainly because kids are spending less time in the sun. These days, toddlers are more often inside watching TV than playing outside. And if they are in the sun, they are lathered with sun block, which reflects the sun's rays and decreases vitamin D formation. Obviously, sunscreen is important and should not be avoided! But it does lead to lower levels of vitamin D. Also, many toddlers do not get enough vitamin D to meet their needs since there are limited food sources of high vitamin D content.

The current recommendation is 400 IU per day in the form on of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). New studies are showing that higher levels may be needed to prevent the diseases discussed above. Many are now recommending 1,000 IU per day in the form of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). If your child doesn't get this amount of vitamin D in his diet, you may want to consider a multivitamin that contains vitamin D.

What Should I do?

1. Get at least 10 minutes, 3 times per week of sun exposure.

Although this may sound easy to do, certain location like colder regions may not provided enough UV light and in warmer climate this may increase the risk of skin cancer.

2. Consume foods that contain vitamin D.

Foods that contain Vitamin D include fortified milk, fortified yogurt, fortified breakfast cereals, wild salmon, canned tuna, cod liver oil, sun-dried shitake mushrooms and egg yolks.

3. Take a supplement.

Taking a daily vitamin supplement is the most effective means of meeting vitamin D needs. Take one multi-vitamin that contains at least 1000 IU of vitamin D daily OR supplement with a calcium pill that contains at least 1000 IU of vitamin D per day.

What are the Benefits of Noni?

The Noni Fruit Tree originates in humid tropical climates. It is most native to the Islands of Hawaii, growing in black lava soil and along lava covered beaches. It has also been found in Tahiti, French Polynesia, Southeast Asia, the Dominican Republic and the Pacific Islands. It grows best in the black lava soil, but will also flourish on sandy rocky beaches, salty or saline soils, limestone out crops and in shady forest areas. It is related to the coffee family, Rubiaceae.

It has been called the starvation or famine fruit because it quite frankly tastes pretty bad on it's own. It has a knobby texture on the outside, very similar to that of a pineapple, and a white skin and is shaped like a gourd or heavy white potato. It has been called the Cheese fruit because it gives off an odor like curing cheese when it is ripening. The fruit itself is quite ugly and really doesn't look like a fruit at all. It has been known by many different names, including the Great Morinda, Indian Mulberry, Mengkudu, Beach Mulberry, Tahitian Noni, and Cheese fruit. Its scientific name is Morinda Citrifolia.

The main use of the fruit is the juice and ground powder. The powder itself is loaded with Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Calcium with trace amounts of sodium. It is also a good source of dietary fiber and carbohydrates. Noni is said to have boosting power for your metabolism. This fruit also contains a sufficient amount of essential fatty acids, flavanoids, polysaccharides, indoids and phytoestrogens.

Noni also has trace amounts of beta-sitosterol which is an anti-cholesterol agent. The fruit, leaves, and bark are all used in many health food manufacturers and countries for herbal and natural healing remedies. In China, Samoa, Japan and Tahiti, they use the flowers, fruit, bark, leaves, and roots for herbal remedies that treat or cure fever, eye problems, skin ailments, throat gum maladies, bowel and intestine problems and respiratory malfunctions.

Facts About Vitamins You Probably Don't Know

Everyone knows vitamins are essential for a healthy body. Vitamins are required for humans and animals for normal growth, reproduction and maintenance. But how much do you know about vitamins?

Vitamins were discovered in 1906 by English biochemist Sir F.G. Hopkins. He found that most foods contain extra substances necessary for health. The word comes from the term vitamine from the Polish-American biochemist Casimir Funk. In 1912 Hopkins and Funk formulated the vitamin hypothesis of deficiency disease or the theory that certain diseases are caused by a lack of specific vitamins in the diet.

Originally vitamins were only seen as a preventative against deficiency diseases. Now studies have found there are additional benefits from vitamins. Many of today's food products have added vitamins.

You might know that vitamins are classified by their solubility in water or fats. They are usually classified alphabetically as well. The fat-soluble vitamins include A, D, E, and K and the B complex and C vitamins are classified as water-soluble. You may not have heard of the vitamin P group that decrease blood capillary fragility since they are no longer considered vitamins.

Lets look at some of the vitamins and their roles.

Vitamin A is known as retinal and is a fat-soluble lipid. It is essentially for skeletal growth and normal reproduction. It is also important to the health of the skin and mucus membranes. A deficiency can cause night blindness, abnormalities of the skin, and susceptibility to serious infection.

There are several vitamins in the Vitamin B complex group.

Thiamine or B1 is a factor in the maintenance of the appetite, normal function of the intestines, and the health of the cardiovascular and nervous systems. A deficiency could lead to beriberi.

Riboflavin or B2 is important to oxidation of the cells. A deficiency leads to inflammation of the tongue, skin disease and severe irritation of the eyes.

Niacin is known to prevent pellagra. In 1912 an American medical researcher, Joseph Goldberger found pellagra as a result of the niacin deficiency. The amino acid tryptophan is the predecessor of niacin. A deficiency can cause skin disease, diarrhea, dementia and death while a deficiency in dogs can cause black-tongue disease.

Phosphorous or B6 is necessary in the metabolism of amino acids, glucose and fatty acids. Deficiency can affect the central nervous systems such as causing convulsions in infants, inadequate growth and weight loss or anemia.

Pantothenic acid, another B vitamin, is a component important to coenzyme A. The adrenal glands are important to pantothenic acid activity. There are no known deficiencies.

Biotin aids in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and amino acids. No known deficiencies have been found.

Folic acid directly affects the synthesis of nucleic acids. Inadequate amounts of folic acid in pregnant women can lead spina bifida in newborns.

Vitamin C is the most common vitamin. It was first found in citrus fruits by American biochemists Albert Szent-Gyorgyi and Charles King in 1928-1933. It is necessary for the synthesis of the body's collagen, dentin, cartilage and bone matrix. It's also an antioxidant that's necessary for many metabolic processes. A deficiency can result in scurvy.

Vitamin D is actually hormones but continues to be classified as vitamins. It plays a role in the metabolism of calcium and phosphorous and prevents rickets in children. Deficiency symptoms in children include knock-knees, bowlegs, and more severe crippling deformations of the bones. In adults the deficiency can result in a softening of the bones.

Vitamin E is necessary for cell membrane maintenance. It's a strong antioxidant and many studies have found it is effective against arterial plaque buildup and cancer. It also is helpful in preventing problems specific to premature babies.

Vitamin K is essential to blood clotting. Danish biochemist Henrik Dam identified Vitamin K in 1934. A deficiency leads to slow blood clotting and hemorrhaging of tissues. It can cause hemorrhagic disease in infants and liver damage.

These vitamins are more correctly known as antioxidants. Those are extremely important. You see, antioxidants provide protection against free radicals. If you suffer from canker sores, then you know how painful and irritating these recurring ulcerated mouth sores can be. They appear on the inside of your mouth - on the tongue, soft palate (the back portion of the roof of your mouth), or inside your cheeks, and are round, white, or gray in color, with a red edge or border.

There seems to be a controversy on the cause of canker sores, and even exactly what they are - a bacterial or viral infection? An allergic reaction to certain food, or a vitamin deficiency?

It appears the answer is this - the cause is different from person to person. To find an effective treatment, it's important to be mindful when you get a canker sore of what food you ate, if something painful occurred in the mouth, such as dental work or biting the inside of your cheek, if you are under a lot of emotional stress, or not getting adequate sleep.

To determine if a specific food, or more than one food, is causing your problem, do something called "food elimination". For a few weeks, eliminate the suspected foods. If there have been no canker sores during that time, reintroduce them one at a time for a week or so to see which one, or more than one, triggers a canker.

If you prefer an approach that doesn't involve food elimination, try nutritional supplementation. On a daily basis, take 1,000-1,200 milligrams of buffered vitamin C. This will help reduce the level of histamines in your body. You can enhance the effectiveness of the vitamin C by taking 1,000 milligrams of quercetin which by inhibiting histamine release, will reduce inflammation, allowing for a quicker healing of an existing canker sore.

A THIAMIN DEFICIENCY? Research shows that a deficiency of thiamin can lead to recurrent mouth ulcers. Take 100 milligrams of thiamin daily as a preventative.

A High-Potency Multivitamin - If purchased at a health food store, it should give you the nutrients necessary to prevent canker sores. Take 800 micrograms of folic acid, 500-1,000 micrograms of vitamin B12, 10 milligrams of iron, and 20 milligrams of zinc. If your multivitamin doesn't include all you need, add what's needed to make up the difference.

Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice (DGL) - There's an herb known as licorice, which has anti-inflammatory properties, decreases healing time, and soothes canker sore pain. Chew one or two 200-milligram tablets two or three times a day until the sore heals. In addition, you can empty the powder from a capsule into one half cup of lukewarm water, dissolve the DGL, and swish the solution around in your mouth. Repeat this at least two or three times a day until the sore has healed.

Tea Bag - Tannin from tea may relieve the pain almost instantly. Hold a used tea bag against the sore for a few minutes. Repeat a few times daily until healed.
