Using Dental Appliances For Sleep Apnea Is An Effective Alternative To CPAP

By Ines Brennan

Patients experiencing the condition known as sleep apnea suffer from periods of shallow respiration or even no respiration while they are sleeping. Some patients are recommended to use a CPAP machine (continuous positive airway pressure), but this isn't appropriate for everyone. The use of dental appliances for sleep apnea is another approach which is simple and can also be effective for establishing normals respiratory patterns.

There are many types of appliances which can prevent sleep apnea which work in different ways. Some reposition the lower jaw while others hold the tongue in a forward position. Although such devices can be obtained rather easily, including ordering them online, it is always best to visit a dentist or orthodontist who specializes in this kind of treatment. They will be able to provide patients with custom-fitted appliances which are more effective than those which are ready to wear and not made to specifications.

The dental professional will make some plaster impressions of the patient's teeth. These molds are used to fashion the appliance based on the specific dimensions and shape of the mouth. If the device is made especially for the patient it will fit better making it more comfortable and effective at achieving its purpose.

There are also other evaluations that need to be done in order to ensure that the device is made to proper fit. Another set of molds will be made and sent to a laboratory where the appliance will be created. When the patient returns he or she will receive the apparatus and the dentist will perform any adjustments that may be needed for fit and comfort.

Most anti-apnea devices are worn similar to a retainer, there may be some slight discomfort at first but this is normal and in most cases the patient gets used to it without problem. However, if there is any pain in the jaw, especially the temporomandibular joint, this must be pointed out to the dentist as another approach may be needed. People who suffer from TMJ are not good candidates for using these appliances. Any discomfort in the jaw needs to be closely watched, in order to prevent a problem from developing.

During the course of the treatment period, the patient's lower jaw will gradually move forward more. This is usually most noticeable once about six months of treatment have passed. This is part of the process and it lends itself to the safety and effectiveness of the appliance.

The patient will also need to attend a sleep study session after several weeks of treatment. This is done to determine if the approach has successfully eliminated or reduced the occurrence of apnea. It is advisable to undergo this assessment in the same facility where the first diagnostic was carried out, in order to allow easier comparison of results.

Dental appliances for sleep apnea are a good solution for many people who do not wish to use a CPAP machine. It is important to make sure the device fits and works right and only obtain it through the direction of a dental care provider who is familiar with this area of treatment. Sometimes it is necessary to make changes in order to produce better results.

How To Tell If You Have A TMJ Symptom

By Rashel Dan

TMJ is one of the common health conditions that affects parts of the body like the head, neck, jaw, shoulders and the back. It is accompanied by pain and discomfort in the jaw. TMJ is basically caused by an inflammation in the jaw, which eventually causes a TMJ symptom you might or might not notice.

Some patients may experience symptoms that are so miniscule that they will not feel uncomfortable having them for the rest of their lives. However, if a TMJ symptom is found, it is important to find treatment right away, since TMJ does not only affect the jaw. If you'd like to know whether you have a TMJ symptom or not, go through some of the common TMJ symptoms.

Symptoms In Function

One of the first things you may notice when you have TMJ is feeling a particular soreness in your facial muscles or jaws upon waking up in the morning. You may find that you have a hard time opening and closing your mouth, or biting properly. These conditions make it especially difficult for you to chew or eat certain types of food. TMJ can also impair speech to a certain degree, as the jaw tends to lock or experience too much tension.

You may notice that, along with the impairment of physical function are sounds you may notice in your jaw like clicking and popping. Grinding sounds can also occur as you start to grind your teeth to find a good bite. Grinding can occur at night when you are sleeping, so if your roommate or partner tells you about this the next day, then may have a TMJ symptom.

Visual Symptoms

Visible symptoms of TMJ would include the jaw protruding from the patients face. If you need to physically pull your jaw backwards towards your ears just to have a comfortable bite, then you may have a TMJ symptom. When you have TMJ, your body reflexes by using your chewing muscles to tow your jaw forward.

If the case becomes worsened your head may start to lean forward as your anterior neck muscles gradually stretch. This can give you overall bad posture.

The more obvious sign and symptom of TMJ is if the areas around your mouth become red and swollen. Another obvious TMJ symptom is having an unbalanced lip position and a prominent facial fold under the chin.

Symptoms Of Other Conditions

The problem with TMJ is that it can cause other conditions. Symptoms can be experienced in linked conditions such as headaches and ringing in the ears, since the head and ears are one of the closest body parts to the affected jaw. You may feel constantly dizzy or develop sleeping disorders because of the discomfort.

TMJ symptom can cause you to experience back pains and even difficulty swallowing/breathing. You may also develop cervical problems including pain and discomfort in the cervix, since a TMJ symptom can gradually become a symptom found in the head and neck.

What's a Good Home Treatment For TMJ Problems?

By Rashel Dan

TMJ may become a painful experience for some. It doesn't mean though that you need to resort to drastic medical solutions. In non-severe cases TMJ can be avoided or treated at home. What home treatment TMJ solution can you use?

Relaxation Techniques

Tension and stress may not always cause TMJ problems but they could cause a minor form of it or make an existing TMJ condition worse. Just imagine what you do every time you feel tense. You may not know it but you may be clenching your teeth or hardening your facial muscles. This could result in TMJ problems. One good home treatment TMJ solution is to simply be aware when you are tense and relax. If you find it hard to ease the tension away, then look for ways that could help you do so. You could take a break from work and have a relaxing cup of tea or you could imagine a relaxing thought while listening to soothing music. Whatever can help you relax is a potential home treatment TMJ solution.

Eating Schedule

Our busy schedule does not always allow us to eat on time. This is one practice that could lead to a TMJ problem. Another home treatment TMJ solution is to reserve your eating schedule for eating only. This will ensure that you never have to chew and swallow hurriedly as a result of work momentum.

Use Jaws Properly

You can further protect your jaws by not overusing them. This means you should only eat hard food occasionally or avoid them altogether. If you know that you have a recurring jaw problem, then steer clear of bubble gum or chewing gum. Let your jaws rest after your main daily meals. Large chunks of food should also be sliced before you put them in your mouth. Doing so would mean your jaws would have to work less in breaking down food.

Good Posture

Having a good posture is also a home treatment TMJ solution. Immobile, hunched or stiff positions could lead to jaw pain. Good posture on the other hand can ensure that your jaws are properly situated.

Compress

Cold or hot compress is an excellent TMJ prevention and cure. A cold or hot compress can ease the stress and pain on your jaws.

Exercise

Although it may be a good idea not to overuse your jaws, you should practice proper jaw exercise as an additional home treatment TMJ solution. It would be a good idea though to specifically ask your doctor for exact instructions on jaw exercises. Massaging and moving your jaws on your own might not be appropriate for your specific condition.

Take Medicine

Take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications or pain relievers to aid your home treatment TMJ methods. Together with applying a compress, this is probably one of the safest home treatment TMJ solutions.

Available Options for Home Treatment for TMJ

By Rashel Dan

TMJ disorder symptoms can have varying degrees of pain. Although some may experience light discomfort, there are also those who suffer intense pain. Sometimes, the pain can be excruciating that it can already affect a person's daily activities. When this happens, it becomes tempting to immediately think about aggressive solutions like surgery. Generally though, every other solution should be attempted first before considering invasive treatment. You might want to first consider some home treatment TMJ solutions.

- The most straightforward solution is to simply rest your jaw. This could mean properly scheduling your eating and speaking time. Do not even chew gum when you are resting.

- Never eat and work at the same time. This can lead to tense jaw clenching.

- Non prescription anti inflammatory medicine and pain relievers can also be taken if the pain becomes unbearable. It is important however to take even over the counter medicines only as indicated or in the right amounts. Resist the urge to over medicate.

- You may either use a hot or cold compress to help ease the pain and discomfort of a TMJ disorder. TMJ conditions differ from one person to another and some people may be comfortable only with one or the other kind of compress. Be sensitive on what works for you.

- A bad posture is one possible cause for worse TMJ pain. Make sure that your posture is always correct when sitting and standing.

- Switch to soft and easy to bite foods for a few days to prevent the pain from aggravating. A good home treatment TMJ solution is to keep away from candies, bagels, steak and other crunchy or hard foods. You might also want to stay away from foods that require you to open your jaws widely like large decked or rolled sandwiches.

- Be cautious about clenching your teeth in tense situations. Remind yourself not to clench or grind. If tense or stressful situations increase clenching, then keep away as much as possible from these tense situations. If you cannot entirely keep away, then at least set aside a few hours a day to calm yourself and your jaws.

- Wear mouthguard or splint when slipping. This is to prevent teeth from grinding. Some people however unfortunately do experience worse symptoms with mouth guards.

- Since stress can be a cause for TMJ, learn to manage or deal with stress. One great way is to learn and practice relaxation techniques that can be used while seated in an office. Some good and easy techniques are deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation. At home, you can also perform yoga, meditation or listen to relaxing music and sounds.

- If possible, limit the use of your jaw to important talk and eating only. Avoid using it to hold the phone. You should also avoid using your mouth to hold objects while your hands are busy.

- Inquire about jaw massage and exercise techniques from your doctor.

Of course, even the most common home treatment TMJ may not work for others especially those suffering from severe cases. Be sure to consult with your doctor first before seriously following a home remedy.
