The Powerful Properties Of The Caralluma Herb

By Therese Zachary

The Caralluma herb is basically an edible succulent plant. It has been utilized by the people of India for over a hundred years for many purposes, including the control of hunger and improved strength. However it has also been simply used in cooking, as Caralluma is a typical part of the Indian diet. So what is the Caralluma herb all about exactly?

Caralluma Characteristics - Spiny leaves and thick flowers characterize the Caralluma plant. The flowers are star shaped and may be purple, red, black or yellow. They are typically show during the summer or fall. The Caralluma stands with an angular stem and is clump forming. While the herb has been found extremely useful in many kinds of situations, it is also characterized by a foul odor. The Caralluma herb thrives throughout most of India and even reaches Afghanistan and nearby places.

As Vegetable - Hundreds upon hundreds of years, even before the Caralluma herb was known to the Western world, it has been utilized by the locals of India as a vegetable. It has also been mixed with chutneys and pickles. It can be consumed both cooked and raw. The green follicles of the herb are often boiled, salted, and consumed.

For the past few centuries, people have discovered certain properties that made the Caralluma herb more than just part of a vegetable diet. These properties were somehow able to suppress appetite naturally while enhancing energy levels and satiating thirst at the same time. Because of this, the Caralluma has become an extremely useful type of "portable food." It is even called a "famine food", since it helped fight off hunger in times of desperate need of food. Those who had to travel long distances on land also needed something to make their journey a bit more bearable. Even back in history the Caralluma herb was already being used by tribesmen to treat health conditions such as diabetes.

In the modern day, more scientists and researches have begun to understand just how useful the Caralluma herb could be in the Western world as well. Because it is well-known for its appetite suppressing and energy boosting properties, it could very well be used in weight loss regimens.

Other Benefits - Not only that, further studies have shown that the Caralluma herb indeed contains properties that are able to lower blood sugar levels in the body as well. So with the herb itself, you can lose weight effectively and stay the healthiest possible.

Powerful Properties

Saponins - The Caralluma herb carries saponins, which are natural cleansing properties. These special properties are beneficial for a variety of things. They can help fight against acne as well as oily skin and scalp. They are able to sooth symptoms of dermatitis, dandruff and eczema. Saponins are basically antioxidants, which means they are also able to fight against free radicals that damage cells. Moreover, they are known to treat arthritis and are anti-rheumatic. Other uses are for enhanced endurance and mental concentration.

There are other properties and components as well. Other key components of the Caralluma herb include Flavone Glycosides, Pregnane Glycosides, Megastigmane Glycosides, and Bitter Principles. All these are called phytochemical constituents, which help in maintaining a healthy weight and appearance when consumed as recommended.

Things to Consider When You Buy Caralluma Fimbriata

By Therese Zachary

A lot of people want to buy Caralluma fimbriata. It is after all one of the best natural appetite suppressants in the world. There are however a couple of product choices for Caralluma. You would want to buy the best Caralluma product available. What are the things you should consider?

Brand Name

The Caralluma brand name speaks for itself. Although some brands have become too hyped, popular brands retain their quality. Otherwise no consumer would ever consider buying the brand. It would therefore be best to buy a Caralluma brand that enjoys great popularity and a good reputation among consumers. The best way to check for this would be to go to product review sites. These are where you?ll find out just what consumers think and feel about a particular product brand.

Product Ingredients

A brief look at its history will tell you that Caralluma is commonly obtained from India. Before you buy a product, make sure you try to find out first if the product really does contain authentic Caralluma from India or some other valid source. This isn?t the only thing you should check though. You also need to find out if the product of your choice does not contain any other synthetic chemical ingredients mixed with Caralluma. Pure Caralluma is what you should look for. Chemical additives may result in side effects.

Manufacturing Process

A look at the manufacturing process will tell you a lot about the product. A product may contain authentic Caralluma but you need to be certain that the capsules, which are the end products, are manufactured in a clean, controlled and standard way. Ask the manufacturer how their product is manufactured. They should at least have a process for quality control from the moment they receive the raw ingredients to the point when they package the capsules. Elements that may be included in quality control are periodic inspection, continuous monitoring and standard measurements.

Product Presentation

Packaging - Let's face it. You probably wouldn?t buy a product that doesn?t seem presentable. A manufacturer should invest in building product packaging, image and appearance. This shows that a manufacturer is financially able to do so and has enough respect for its customers not to show a slip shod product presentation. It is therefore important to check product websites. Comprehensive content, proper organization and relevant information are among the things you should be looking for.

Purchase Terms

Convenience - You would naturally be more interested in a product that you can buy conveniently. Aside from convenience you also need to be assured that your buyer details are kept safe and private. Make sure that a manufacturer is able to provide you with all of these. You would also be making a good purchase if you settled for a product that offers some guarantees. You at least have some assurance that you can get your money back if something is wrong with the product or if you are dissatisfied in some way.

It's now quite easy to buy Caralluma fimbriata. What you need to make sure of though is your product choice. When you make the right decision about which product to get, you?ll never have to worry about solutions that don?t work or product problems.

Caralluma Fimbriata: The Next Hoodia?

By Barry Crewse

Caralluma Fimbriata. Almost no one has even heard of it and those who have may be asking just what the heck it is. The first thought for most people is just another fad diet gimmick. But is it? Could it be pure gold in the world of weight loss? Let's find out.

Caralluma belongs to the cactus family and is known as a succulent. It grows wild in much of India and as far north as Afghanistan and the surrounding areas.

For literally hundreds of years it has been eaten by the locals of the region as a vegetable and can be eaten both raw and cooked. The green follicles of the plant are usually boiled, salted and eaten. It is also very popular there in making a variety of different chuntney's and pickles.

The locals who eat this vegetable found it contained certain properties that acted like a natural appetite and diet suppressant while at the same time boosting their energy level and quenching their thirst. For this reason Caralluma has always been used as a portable hunting food and also became known locally as a "famine food" and used extensively in the drier, more arid regions of India.

Of course, modern science has now caught up with all the benefits of Caralluma Fimbriata and the new arrival of this succulent cactus is just now becoming very popular for not only being able to suppress your appetite and boost your endurance but it also appears to lower blood sugar.

Clinical researchers are discovering that the extracts of Caralluma actually act on the hunger centers within the brain reducing the feeling of being hungry. Further more, these studies have found that appetite suppression takes place without any known disturbances in the natural function of the neurotransmitters within the brain itself. This is surprisingly different than most appetite suppressants on the market today.

Clinical studies are also finding that one main extract of Caralluma, pregnane glycoside, is not only very effective in controlling appetite, obesity and weight gain but also is appearing as a major player in lowering your BMI, body fat, blood glucose levels and blood pressure as well. Reductions in hip and waste circumferences were noted as well.

The same studies have also concluded that there appears to be improvement in not only memory function, hearing and capillary health but also notable enhancement of the HDL/LDL blood ratio's as well as controlling joint inflammation and others.

What Caralluma Fimbriata is not is that it is not artificial and is completely natural. There are no chemicals or preservatives needed with this supplement which can interfere with your body's natural diet processes.

There have never been any recorded instance of adverse reaction or toxicity in the extensive studies undertaken to determine it's safety in human consumption. The fact that it has been eaten for centuries should be proof for certain of it's benefits and long term positive effects on the human body.

Caralluma is just now coming onto center stage of the dieting world and I am sure you will be hearing much more about this future giant. Not only do I expect it to overtake Hoodia, which appears to be less effective and more expensive but also most other weight supplements which seems to be only minimally effective.

Ginger Root's Medicinal Value

By Susannah Singer

Ginger is one of the most widely used herbs in the world. We use the root of a plant native to Asia but today cultivated in the West Indies, Jamaica, and Africa. Francisco de Mendosa introduced ginger to Spain in the early 1500's (and from there to the new world) but its value was known in the far east long before that.

Ginger powder comes from a perennial tuber type root (like a potato) that creeps and grows underground. The stalk has narrow leaves and grows to be about two feet tall. In the fall the tuber is harvested, dried, and ground into the herb powder. Black or coated ginger means the root was immediately scalded (not peeled) after harvesting. White or uncoated ginger was washed and scraped to prevent sprouting. To whiten it even more, white ginger is at times bleached or limed but this process robs it of some of its value.

Ginger's value is found in chemicals like potassium acetate, lignin, acrid soft resin, gum, vegeto matter, asmazone, volatile oil (up to 3%), acetic acid, starch, and sulphur.

Ginger will stimulate appetite, fight body odor, and promote perspiration. It is best known as a traditional Asian medicine to treat nausea. It has relieved morning sickness as well as the nausea related to chemotherapy. Some say ginger is more effective in relieving motion sickness than Dramamine.

Ginger also helps treat joint pain by stimulating blood circulation causing redness of the skin. This makes it effective in treating illnesses such as rheumatoid arthritis and Raynaud's syndrome.

Often ginger is used in the treatment of indigestion, flatulence, menstrual cramps and diarrhea and relieves gastrointestinal distress. It is effective because it copies some digestive enzymes used to process protein in the body.

Ginger is beneficial to the heart as well. As little as 5 grams of dried ginger a day slows the production of triglycerides and LDL (bad) cholesterol in the liver. Ginger also prevents platelets from sticking together, a condition that would increase the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Many like its flavor and aroma and like to use it in cooking as a seasoning or a tea. One online recipe for gingersnap cookies calls for one teaspoon of ginger powder. It is also a popular treatment for cold symptoms for it is said to loosen phlegm and spread a warm feeling throughout the body thus fighting chills.

Ginger is available in capsules, pickles, extracts, and prepared teas that can be made into compresses. The ginger root may also be consumed raw, but avoid small, wrinkled, or soft tubers. Steep ginger in hot water to make a tea, or just add it to a variety of dishes. The usual dosage is 1/3 of an ounce of fresh ginger root per day. Preserved Ginger is made by steeping the root in hot syrup. Store ginger root dry in your refrigerator for short periods. You can also freeze ginger root for up to three months.

If you are pregnant, it would be wise to restrict your use of ginger because it may stimulate uterine contractions. People taking beta-blockers, insulin, blood thinners, barbiturates, or diabetes medications should consult their doctor before using ginger because it may conflict with some of these medications. Ginger may also reduce the absorption of dietary iron and fat-soluble vitamins, and actually upset the stomach in higher doses. Also, ginger helps thin the blood. Therefore avoid taking it two weeks prior to surgery.

Treating the Digestive Tract With Fennel

By Susannah Singer

Though fennel is native to Europe, especially the Mediterranean region, it is today cultivated in many other parts of the world, including Asia, China, and North America. Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a tall perennial herb. The leaves, bulb, and stalk of fennel look a lot like white celery and are edible. Its seeds are used as both a spice in cooking and in making herbal medicines. Fennel has a sweet licorice taste, and is widely used in Mediterranean cuisine.

Fennel has appeared in European history records for centuries. It grows wild in many parts of the world usually in dry soils upon river-banks or near the sea-coast, particularly on limestone soils. It is cultivated in the south of France, Galicia, Saxony, Russia, India and Persia. The odor of Fennel seed is pleasant and it has a warm, sweet and aromatic taste.

Fennel has a thick bright green root-stock and stout stems. The four to five feet tall plant has a certain beauty about it. The branched leaves bring forth bright golden flowers that blossom in July and early August each having thirteen to twenty rays.

The stems are used in soups or salads. Some even claim that eating the peeled stalks relaxes the body for sleep.

The presence of terpenoid anethole in fennel has made it famous for treating digestive ailments since the time of the ancient Egyptians. It has the ability to calm the gastrointestinal tract and relieve cramps. Often fennel is mixed with wormwood, peppermint, and caraway to treat heartburn, indigestion, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

Fennel has traditionally be used to stimulate menstruation and milk production in nursing mothers, and to treat hormonal imbalance including PMS, menopause, and low libido. One study showed that fennel enhances the effects of estrogen in the system. It is used to relax the uterus, and to promote natural breast enhancement.

Fennel also helps with congestion problems by loosing phlegm in the breathing passages and treating a persistent cough. Give the patient fennel tea to do this, made by crushing 1 to 2 teaspoons of fennel seeds and mixing them in a cup of hot water.

Fennel also has a reputation for being an appetite suppressant and thus it is used to promote weight-loss. Some studies have shown that fennel has some diuretic effect, and may help reduce water retention.

Fennel can be purchased as an oil, seed, capsule, tincture, or liquid seed extract. You can also grow it yourself but keep it away from tomatoes or caraway as this will hinder their production. Use 2 to 12 drops of the oil, or 1 to 1.5 teaspoons of the seeds, or .5 teaspoons of the liquid daily.

A few cautions are in order. Some have reported allergic and asthmatic reactions to fennel. Don't give it to small children or take it for extended periods yourself. Don't take it if you are a pregnant or lactating woman either.

Pure Hoodia Gordonii and the Importance of the CITES Certificate

By Reagan Miers

If you are thinking about taking hoodia diet pills to help you with your weight loss, you probably know that CITES certificates differentiate pure hoodia gordonii from inferior hoodia products. Yet, I wonder how many people truly understand what the CITES certificate really is and why it's so important. As a consumer I want you to know what the certificate is and what it means within the hoodia market.

The hoodia gordonii plant is a protected species due to its limited supply and high demand. It is only found in South Africa and until recent years, was only grown wild. Due to the increasing popularity for hoodia gordonii, farming began in an attempt to keep up with skyrocketing demand. In order to protect the hoodia plant and the industry as a whole, including the San people who have a vested interest in their native crop, the South African government implemented controls, licenses, and regulations for the harvesting and exportation of hoodia gordonii.

One of the basic regulations put in place for the endangered hoodia gordonii is the implementation of the CITES certificate. CITES stands for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. This is basically an agreement between governments that ensures that international trade of the plant doesn't threaten its survival. There are other regulations and documents that are required, too, but for the sake of this article I am only going to discuss the CITES certificate.

In order for a company to legally export hoodia gordonii from South Africa, an export permit from CITES must be obtained. Every shipment exported from South Africa must be accompanied by a CITES permit. These permits expire in six months, but the expiration period only pertains to the actual shipment of hoodia gordonii out of South Africa. In other words, a supplier has six months from the time they are issued a CITES permit to actually ship the hoodia gordonii out of South Africa. If they don't and the shipment of hoodia sits in the port, the supplier must reapply for a new permit.

There has been a lot of confusion about the dates on CITES permits. Some people are made to believe that the dates on these permits must be "current" or the company involved in the selling of hoodia gordonii is shady or lying. A CITES certificate that is outdated or old is just that - which means the six month window of exportation has expired.

When someone exports hoodia gordonii from South Africa, the original CITES permit stays with the inventory until it is gone. If a supplier exports thousands of kilograms of hoodia on one permit, they may not sell out of it for months and months. Yes, the date on the CITES permit will be expired, but the permit itself is still valid and proves the hoodia gordonii is legal and authentic. Just because a CITES permit may have expired doesn't mean the plant that is being used is a fake, or that shady practices are involved in the business.

Something that is important for you to know is a CITES certificate may have a different company's name on it than the company you are purchasing the hoodia products from. This means you may go to the XYZ Company to purchase hoodia supplements and upon viewing their CITES certificate you see the supplier's name is ABC Company. The names on the CITES permits may not always match up.

Supplement companies purchase their hoodia gordonii from suppliers. Suppliers are the ones that are listed on the CITES permits. These are the companies that actually go in and export the hoodia out of South Africa. There are only a limited number of suppliers who can obtain CITES permits. In the above example, the ABC Company is the supplier of the hoodia gordonii to the XYZ Company.

It's important that you understand that just because a website display a CITES certificate isn't a guarantee that the company is packaging pure hoodia gordonii into their products. As you probably know, there are no regulations on supplements, so companies can make claims about their products, even if they may not be true.

That is not always true. Keep in mind that the only thing a CITES permit proves is that a supplier was given the right to export "X amount" of hoodia gordonii from South Africa. Once the supply is exported, the supplier and any company purchasing hoodia from the supplier can do what they want with the hoodia gordonii. A company may claim they are selling a hoodia diet pill that contains 500mg of authentic hoodia gordonii, and while they may have a CITES certificate for the supply they purchased, they may not use a full 500mg in each capsule! They may only use 250mg or 150mg or whatever may be the case.

Now that you have a better understanding of what the CITES certificate is and what its role is, you know why looking for one is important when trying to find authentic hoodia gordonii diet pills and products.

What You Need To Know About Appetite Suppressors

By Therese Zachary

You could be one of the many who could use some appetite suppressors. But are you even convinced that you really need them? What are your appetite suppressant options?

Why Use Appetite Suppressants

Appetite suppressants are just what the term suggests. These are substances, procedures or techniques people use to help curb the appetite or craving for food. People typically need these as part of a comprehensive weight loss program. It is obvious that someone who has a constant craving for food will have a hard time managing or maintaining his ideal weight. Depending on the substance or technique of choice, suppressants can either modify chemical signals or reactions in the body or they can modify food choices and intake to cut appetite.

Suppressant Options

There are many appetite suppressant options. Your doctor could prescribe you with certain medications. It is important to note though that these medicines are usually recommended only for a brief period of time. They are therefore used only to control appetite while a person on a weight loss program is trying to fit into prescribed food choices and eating habits.

Appetite Suppressor Techniques - Aside from the medical option, you could also use techniques that are also appetite suppressors. Some of these techniques include eating slowly, drinking water before a meal, eating salads before a meal and eating small but frequent portions. You can also modify your food choices to contain more vegetables which contain fiber and whole wheat grains which contain complex carbohydrates. By modifying aspects of your diet and habits, you also limit your appetite.

Natural Products - A final option would be to use natural products to stop your appetite. Reputable natural products contain main ingredients that have been traditionally known in many countries as suppressants. In the past, the popular option has been to use products containing Hoodia. The plant however is an endangered and protected one so not every product that says it contains Hoodia really does. A more recent discovery is the Indian plant Caralluma. A reputable product that contains Caralluma has the same appetite suppressing effect as Hoodia products. Caralluma has passed tests for general safety.

Making Your Choice

The Trouble with Appetite - The truth is that it really is difficult to try to curb your appetite. Some individuals can jump from one method to another without truly finding that one method that is completely effective. This is because people are unique individuals and not every effective technique will work on everyone.

Safety - When you do make your choice though, safety should be your main concern. You would want to suppress your appetite in an effective but safe way. Otherwise, you could suffer from side effects or put yourself at risk of experiencing complications. In this case, losing weight would be pointless.

Consulting a Doctor - To assess the safety of an option, you could ask your doctor to extensively discuss each option. You shouldn?t just take your doctor?s word on it though. You should also perform your own research on various appetite suppressors. Always remember that your health and well being are on the line. Make the right choice.

Hoodia Gordonii & Side Effects

By Philip McDonald

The advantages of using Hoodia Gordonii have become much better knownin recent years. It has been shown to assist substantially in efforts to lose weight.

Hoodia has better health benefits and is quite widely accepted. There are no known side effects associated with products derived from pure Hoodia, and it does not contain stimulants.

Remember that the use of Hoodia pills to help you lose weight does not mean you are on a diet. Its purpose is to keep your appetite suppressed. It will help you feel less hungry while keeping your energy levels high.

As of yet, there have been no reported adverse side effects of Hoodia Gordonii. As a matter of fact it has been included in the African food chain for generations. Some of the world's eldest tribes in Africa have been consuming raw Hoodia for thousands of years.

The local tribes who have consistently used Hoodia generation after generation confirm that there are no side effects to be concerned about. As a result, the South African government classifies Hoodia Gordonii as a food, not a medicine.

The only proven side effect associated with the consumption of Hoodia Gordonii is that it causes the brain to believe that it is "full" even if one has not consumed food. This can be an issue when energy and power is needed if one participates in demanding activities.

There is a great concern that those with eating disorders will want to use Hoodia for rapid weight loss, thus depriving themselves of necessary nutrients.

Product disclaimers for Hoodia state that the product, "Not be used by children, pregnant women, or women who are nursing. It is not intended for those who have an eating disorder or for those who do not need to lose weight.

Hoodia and Appetite Control

By Philip Mc Donald

Hoodia has become quite popular due to the fact that several journalists have broadcast reports of its powers. During a 60 Minutes segment, Leslie Stahl reported that she had used Hoodia and had not experienced any adverse side effects. Tom Mangold, a BBC News correspondent, reported that in addition to a noticeable decrease in his appetite, he found that Hoodia produced a feel-good, almost aphrodisiac effect.

But is there any actual proof that Hoodia suppresses the appetite? Clinical studies have been performed on Hoodia, but perhaps the Bushmen of South Africa present some of the most compelling non-clinical proof. For centuries they have eaten Hoodia Gordonii to suppress their appetites while on extended hunting expeditions. As far as anyone can tell, they have not experienced any ill effects; Hoodia is just an accepted, normal part of their lives.

In 2001, Phytopharm completed a double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical study in healthy, but overweight volunteers using the P57 extract from Hoodia Gordonii. When compared, the P57 group had a significant reduction in caloric intake with no adverse side effects. On average, the P57 group ate about 1,000 calories less in a day than those in the control group.

So, what makes P57 (and Hoodia Gordonii) so effective in suppressing the appetite? The belief is that Hoodia (specifically the P57 found in the hoodia) imitates the effect that glucose has on nerve cells in the brain. Basically, it fools your brain into thinking you are full when you're not and this cuts your urge to snack on unhealthy food. In fact, hoodia is more powerful than glucose in telling the brain that you are full.

Actually, Hoodia seems to have a more powerful effect on limiting the appetite than glucose. According to Dr. Richard Dixey of Phytopharm, the hypothalamus is the area of the brain that senses glucose sugar. Blood sugar rises when you eat, causing the cells to activate and send the message that you are full. It appears that Hoodia contains a molecule that is approximately 10,000 times more potent than glucose. It causes the hypothalamus to send a signal to the cells to make you feel as though you are full, even if you have not yet eaten. In addition, you do not have any desire to eat.

Just remember, you still need to eat, not matter how much Hoodia you consume. We all need food to survive. You will need to learn the difference between real hunger and hormonal hunger. Real hunger is when your body does not have enough food to function and hormonal hunger is caused by fluctuating insulin levels. Hormonal hunger is usually the downfall of dieters, causing carvings for sweets and other junk foods.

You do need to continue to eat meals when you experience real hunger, but you will be eliminating all this snacking due to hormonal hunger. While hoodia can help eliminate both types of hunger, we feel it is unhealthy to skip meals. The real advantage we see to hoodia is that it suppresses cravings for snacks when you are not experiencing real hunger, but hormonal hunger.

What makes Hoodia different from other diet pills is that diet pills and or supplements work by attempting to increase the rate at which our body burns fat and that comes with serious health risks. Hoodia supplements are different because they actually prevent weight gain. As much as everyone argues about the best path to weight loss, it actually is as simple as basic math. You can not gain weight if you consume less calories than you burn. With Hoodia, you have a powerful weapon to fight hunger and therefore consume fewer calories.
