Gingivitis is a type of periodontal disease that afflicts the tissues that support teeth, including periodontal ligaments, alveolar bones and gums. Long-term plaque deposits on the teeth cause this problem. Plaque is made from mucus, food debris and bacteria that develop on the exposed areas of the teeth. The sticky material is the prime cause of tooth decay and left untreated, turns into tartar. Luckily, there are many ways to treat gingivitis.

People with certain lifestyles and bad habits are at a higher risk of developing this disease. This is especially true for those who have uncontrolled diabetes, misaligned teeth, edges or fillings that are rough, poor hygiene, ill-fitted mouth appliance, systematic infections and diseases, pregnancy, or unclean mouth appliances. Many people have some level of gingivitis. Usually this develops during puberty or early stages of adulthood because of hormonal changes.

There are symptoms to look out for in diagnosing this problem. Bleeding gums may occur, which can be seen when there is blood left on the toothbrush, even when gently brushing. Another common symptom is red-purple or bright red gums that are tender when touched. Individuals may experience shiny or swollen gums, or mouth sores as well.

The primary purpose of treatment is reducing inflammation. A dentist or dental hygienist will thoroughly clean the mouth of patients using special tools that are helpful in removal of deposits. After this cleaning, oral hygiene must be done gently and with care. The professionals will teach you how to correctly brush and floss teeth. Professional cleanings may be suggested a couple times a year, or more in severe instances of gum disease.

Home remedies can be used to fix this issue. Brushing the teeth correctly and on a regular basis is important and acts as the primary defense against the disease. Always floss, dedicate at least two minutes to brushing thoroughly and clean the surface of the tongue. Individuals may also consider using an antibacterial mouthwash as a way to destroy extra bacteria that could cause gingivitis.

The habits and routines we have play a major role in our health, including out mouth and teeth. People should eat well, as poor nutrition compromises the ability of the immune system to protect the body against diseases and other health issues. Foods that are acidic or sugary damage tooth enamel and may attract different bacteria. Stress can also lower the ability of the system and should be handled. Home remedies may help fight this disease but a trip to a professional dentist may be necessary.

Gum and tooth health can be endangered by the stressful lives we live and the bad foods we consume. The disease is manageable and treatable but usually requires big changes in routine and habits.
